Silviculture
Conifex is committed to prompt reforestation of all lands it
harvests, with ecologically suitable stock. We plant a mixture of
spruce, pine, balsam and fir to ensure future crops are biologically
diverse and that forested areas remain resistant to harmful pests
and disease.

All stands we reforest are continually monitored and periodically assessed, to ensure they reach a state of “free growing”. A free growing stand is a stand of healthy trees of a commercially valuable species, the growth of which is not impeded by competition from plants, shrubs or other trees. The entire process to achieve free growing status typically takes 12-20 years. Once stands achieve this state they are declared ”free growing” and are relinquished back to the Crown’s care and control.
Conifex employs modern and environmentally sound techniques for site preparation and genetically superior seed is used to sow new seedlings for planting. Our silviculture tracking system enables us to accurately forecast if/when a site will need treatment, what kind of treatment will be required, and enables us to schedule our monitoring and assessments over a span of twenty or more years. In this way we are able to ensure that areas that have been logged are brought back into production as quickly as possible, thus ensuring the sustainability of the timber supply for future generations.
